Can I watch this with family: Idk if you should but you can, some jokes but otherwise not bad as long as no one is queasy or too young.

As an avid horror fan it only feels right that my first Substack review is for Heart Eyes. Valentines Day’s latest slasher featuring horror newcomer Olivia Holt and Scream’s own Mason Gooding.

To get to the point, the movie was great. From beginning to end it fulfilled in its ability to entertain in a new way while keeping in tact the tried and true tropes of horror movies. The film is silly at times but it knows it’s being so and that alone allows the film to have some real fun.

Adding to that is a charming cast that is astutely carried by Gooding and Holt. The two of which prevail as a very root-able pair. Building off a childhood sitcom career, a chilling performance in the Freeform series Cruel Summer and, a personal favorite of mine, comedy slasher Totally Killer, it makes total sense to see Holt triumph in this role. Able to tap into the traits she honed in each project, it seems she had everything the character and film needed to succeed. And I hope it only continues to lead her to more work in the genre. Meanwhile, Gooding is perfect as the tentatively unassuming male lead. And together the two help the film not only entertain but get you to genuinely care about their characters and the world they inhabit.

Overall, I loved seeing Heart Eyes in theaters and am happy it did well. Right as I was feeling a slump in the films surrounding Valentine’s Day, Heart Eyes gave me something to not only look forward to but not be disappointed by.

A great 3.5/5 from me.
